The researcher Gabriel Schleder of the Brazilian Nanotechnology National Laboratory (LNNano) at CNPEM was elected a Young Affiliate Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in the area of physics. The result was announced at the Society’s Ordinary General Assembly on December 4, and the induction ceremony for the new young affiliates in São Paulo is expected to take place in October 2024.
Schleder holds an undergraduate degree in Materials Engineering from the Federal University of ABC, where he also obtained a master’s degree in 2017 and a doctorate in 2021 in Nanosciences and Advanced Materials. For his project entitled “Machine Learning for Materials Science: 2D Materials Discovery and Design” he was awarded the 2022 CAPES Dissertation Prize in the interdisciplinary area and the 2022 José Leite Lopes Prize for Best Dissertation granted by the Brazilian Physical Society.
During his doctoral work he collaborated at the Brazilian Nanotechnology National Laboratory (LNNano) at the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) in Campinas. In 2020–21 he was a visiting doctoral scholar at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where he was later a postdoctoral fellow in applied physics (2021–2023) in the area of simulations and machine learning of quantum materials and a research associate in applied mathematics.
In March 2023 he returned to Brazil as a researcher to help establish the Theory and Data Science group at CNPEM’s LNNano, where he currently works. He was selected by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences to represent Brazil at the BRICS 2023 Young Innovator Prize in South Africa as a finalist for his work on wearable sensors for LNNano, and in December 2023 he was elected a Young Affiliate Member.
About CNPEM
A sophisticated and effervescent environment for research and development, unique in Brazil and present in few scientific centers in the world, the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) is a private non-profit organization, under the supervision of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). The Center operates four National Laboratories and is the birthplace of the most complex project in Brazilian science – Sirius – one of the most advanced synchrotron light sources in the world. CNPEM brings together highly specialized multi-thematic teams, globally competitive laboratory infrastructures open to the scientific community, strategic lines of investigation, innovative projects in partnership with the productive sector and training of researchers and students. The Center is an environment driven by the search for solutions with impact in the areas of Health, Energy and Renewable Materials, Agro-environment, and Quantum Technologies. As of 2022, with the support of the Ministry of Education (MEC), CNPEM expanded its activities with the opening of the Ilum School of Science. The interdisciplinary higher course in Science, Technology and Innovation adopts innovative proposals with the aim of offering excellent, free, full-time training with immersion in the CNPEM research environment. Through the CNPEM 360 Platform, it is possible to explore, in a virtual and immersive way, the main environments and activities of the Center, visit: https://pages.cnpem.br/cnpem360/
