PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOW AFTER THE EXPERIMENT

After completing the research project, it is strongly recommended that the user complete the Infrastructure and Services Assessment Form, available at SAU online.

It is the responsibility of the proponent and the principal investigator (PI) to make good use of the data made available and distributed to their collaborators.

Mandatory citation to be used in users’ publications

Important: the user must explicitly declare the infrastructure used in LNNano, in any article, thesis, or other published material that uses data obtained during their project. Users must also cooperate in providing this information when requested.

Recommendations for acknowledgements and/or co-authorship in scientific articles resulting from the use of LNNano open-access facilities

General Principles

All scientific publications resulting from the use of equipment and/or from the assistance provided by the staff of the LNNano divisions must appropriately acknowledge these contributions. The type of acknowledgment, whether through acknowledgements or co-authorship, will depend on the level and nature of the contribution.

Forms of Acknowledgment

1 – Mandatory Acknowledgements

All publications resulting from the use of equipment and/or technical assistance from the LNNano divisions must include a formal acknowledgment to the respective unit or center. We suggest the following wording:

“The authors acknowledge [name of the laboratory/unit/center] for access to the equipment and for the technical assistance provided during the development of this work.”

In addition, the coordinators of the facilities used must be notified in advance about the publication.

2 – Acknowledgment of Funding Sources

The funding sources that enabled the acquisition of the equipment used must be cited in the acknowledgements, especially if the data were collected during the funding period. The facility, unit, or center staff may advise users on the funding codes and additional information that should be included in the acknowledgements.

3 – Inclusion of Co-authorship

It is recommended that contributions that go beyond routine technical support be recognized through co-authorship in the resulting publications. This includes activities such as:

  • Development or significant optimization of sample preparation protocols
  • Acquisition of experimental data involving fundamental technical decisions
  • Complex data analysis and interpretation, including the development of customized tools
  • Participation in manuscript writing

Important recommendation: Discuss authorship and acknowledgements in advance with the LNNano division teams before submitting the manuscript to the journal.

Specific Examples

Sample Preparation

Contribution

Acknowledgment

Sample preparation following established routine protocols Acknowledgements
Development of new protocols; optimization of existing protocols for special samples Co-authorship

Data or Image Acquisition

Contribution

Acknowledgment

User training for independent data acquisition; acquisition of standardized raw data Acknowledgements
Data acquisition involving fundamental technical decisions; generation or adaptation of specific experimental conditions Co-authorship

Data Analysis

Contribution Acknowledgment
Recommendation of software and analysis tools; supervision and basic suggestions on data processing Acknowledgements
Collaborative data analysis and interpretation; development of complex customized tools for data analysis Co-authorship

Final Remarks

Proper acknowledgment of the LNNano teams reflects not only respect for collaborators but also scientific integrity and transparency. Any questions regarding the classification of a specific contribution should be discussed with the responsible team prior to manuscript submission.
