LNNano - Brazilian Nanotechnology National Laboratory

ISO/IEC 17025:2017

What does ISO 17025 mean?

ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 is an international standard that defines the several requirements for laboratory test and calibration, with priority publication in Brazil by ABNT. Laboratories wishing to demonstrate their metrological competence must implement the standard and submit to the audit of the accrediting body, in Brazil, in Inmetro, through the General Coordination of Accreditation (CGCRE). ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17025:2017 complements ISO 9001: 2015 quality standard, which alone does not guarantee the competence of a laboratory in terms of accurate results.

Differently the quality standards, which confer a certification, ABNT NBR ISO / IEC 17025: 2017 provides an accreditation, that is, an extremely qualified third-party and state of the art leader attests to the competence of the laboratory and its adherence and operation to a documented quality system specific to an accreditation scope. The scope covers certain services offered and their metrological capacity. The accreditation by Inmetro proves that the laboratory performs these activities with high quality and precision, besides what ensures that the certified laboratory has an international standard of excellence and test results accepted in other countries, since Inmetro has a mutual recognition agreement with the European Co-operation for Acreditation (EA).

ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and Modernit Project

The Modernit Project – National Program for Qualification and Modernization of Technological Research Institutes is a program created by FINEP which aims to restructure and reorient the priorities of these Institutes, recovering infrastructure, equipment and technical staff, to improve its services to effectively and efficiently meet the demands of the private sector. Within the scope and priorities of the Modernit Project, it is included the implementation of Quality Management Systems (SGQ), aiming at a continuous improvement in the quality of the tests and services offered to the users. The National Nanotechnology Laboratory (LNNano) of the National Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) participates in the Modernit Project in the context of the accreditation with the Inmetro of standard ISO/IEC 17025: 2017. For this, the LNNano will have the resources and tools of LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System), acquired from the company LabWare, after incorporating the technical and managerial modules of the platform for the management of requirements of the standard ABNT NBR ISO / IEC 17025.
