LNNano - Brazilian Nanotechnology National Laboratory

LNNano Quality Assurance Program

Accreditation by ISO/IEC 17025: 2017

Laboratories wishing to demonstrate their metrological competence must implement ISO/IEC 17025: 2017, an international standard which defines several requirements for laboratory tests and calibration. ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17025:2017 complements ISO 9001: 2015 quality standard, which alone does not guarantee the competence of a laboratory in terms of accurate results.

Differently from quality standards, which confer a certification, ABNT NBR ISO / IEC 17025: 2017 provides an accreditation. An extremely qualified and in the state-of-the-art auditor attests to the competence of the applicant laboratory and its adherence to a documented quality system specific to a scope, usually covering certain services offered which demand metrological capacity.

In Brazil ISO / IEC 17025: 2017 priority publication is done by the Brazilian Authority in Standardization (ABNT), and the accrediting organization is the Brazilian Institute of  Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro), through its General Coordination of Accreditation (CGCRE).

The accreditation by Inmetro proves that the laboratory performs its activities with high quality and precision, besides what ensures that the laboratory has an international standard of excellence. Test results are also accredited in other countries, since Inmetro has a mutual recognition agreement with the European Co-operation for Acreditation (EA).

LNNano is presently preparing the necessary documentation for the process of accreditation, whose completion is expected for December 2019.

RPPNano

RPPNano (Product and Process Network for Nanotechnology) is a program created by the Brazilian Funding Agency for Studies and Projects (FINEP) to restructure and reorient the priorities of Brazilian R&D institutes dealing with nanotechnology, funding infrastructure, equipment and technical staff, to improve their services to effectively and efficiently meet the demands of the private sector.

The scope and priorities of the RPPNano include the implementation of Quality Management Systems (SGQ), aiming at a continuous improvement in the quality of the tests and services offered by the Laboratories of the network to the users.

LNNano participates in RPPNano in the context of the ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 accreditation. The management of the SGQ will be supported by the resources and tools of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) acquired from the company LabWare, provided with specific technical and operational modules dedicated for the management of the requirements of the ABNT NBR ISO / IEC 17025 standard.
